Hey, hey, hey, book lovers. Welcome to Pot on the Rock, the podcast where representation is crucial and it's always for the plot.
SPEAKER_03We're your hosts, Alicia Rickia and Tia, three friends dedicated to honoring the brilliance and the power of black appeal to the authors.
SPEAKER_04We got some hot tape, some spoilers, don't worry, we'll always warn you, and deep combos on culture, identity, and everything in between.
SPEAKER_05Each week we dive deep into a new book, share our unfiltered thoughts, and celebrate the writers who are reshaping the literary world one story at a time. And fair morning, if you're here for a calm, quiet book club, this might not be what you're looking for.
SPEAKER_04Grab your favorite drink, curl up with us, and let's talk books. The ones that move us, excite us, and keep us flipping pages way past our bedtime.
SPEAKER_05So lower your expectations and let's get into the plot.
SPEAKER_03Hello. You so damn silly. I cannot. Keep this in. Keep this in. Welcome back to Plot on the Rocks season two. We have made it. We have made it to our mid season finale. Oh my god. The summer break. Hard fought. Hard fought. Wait, what? We worked through it. No, for real. Life was like thing, uh, work, school, just oh my god. But you know what? We did it as Miss Seely likes to say in the color purple, I am here. Okay, we are here. We still did it. Okay. That musical was so good. I'm still here. Different song. Different song. I know, but it just didn't work ahead to it. I couldn't believe it. Have you listened to the actual like version of the song? Like the one that like the non-lab one? Because it's not big. It's not Tisha contained.
SPEAKER_05There is no Tisha hate on this song.
SPEAKER_03Honestly, that's what we should name. That's what we should name the title of this. It's the journey. It's the journey.
SPEAKER_04I like it. I like it.
SPEAKER_03Tonight we're recapping every book that we read so far this season. We love them. We maybe didn't like them. Maybe we DNF them. But we're going over everything. We're gonna have a little like awards thing. No one's getting any like, you know, actual little trophy. We're just saying it out loud. Right. Virtually. Basically. And we all have different answers for the awards, too, because I just I just realized that we never ever actually came together and talked about it. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, multiple.
SPEAKER_03Exactly. Yeah, so everybody, you get an award. And you get an award. You get an award. Yes. Oh my god. Everybody. But now let's go. What books did we read this season? So this is this season we had The Scammer, I'm Medusa, The Personal Librarian Librarian. Yep. Uh I don't wish well.
SPEAKER_04Vicious Oaths.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Vicious Oaks.
SPEAKER_04Tell me I'm not dreaming.
SPEAKER_03Yes, tell me I'm not dreaming. So let's start with what we would rate. What do you want to go in order from what we read it? Or like I don't know. What we would rate each one, like a star rating, a one-sentence review. I think the biggest one is did our opinions change after the recording? Because I feel like whenever we're done recording, we sit on stuff for a while and then we're just like waiting for it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Let's go in order. Okay, okay. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Okay, so the scammer. The scammer. I don't know what I don't know what we rated it in the in the actual episode. Me either.
SPEAKER_05The scammer, I'm gonna give it, I'm gonna give it a 4.5 out of 5. Okay. And I think I probably gave it a little bit lower when I initially read it, and I'm gonna tell you why, because it was just but with that being said, and maybe this is in light of my recent four way foray into the Nature Boy documentary, which I immersed uh 105 hours of my life. The YouTube one and the YouTube documentary. Okay, but I realized okay, yeah. No, she gave us exactly what it was what it would be like getting caught up into a cult. Okay. Exactly. I think that yeah, I I looking back, I'm like, oh yeah, okay. It was uncomfortable to read, but that's because shit, I ain't gonna get caught up in no cult, but you know it happened. Yeah, yes, yep, it's crazy.
SPEAKER_03Okay, no, I've to watch the nature boy one. I feel like I've been avoiding it because I don't want to be stressed out.
SPEAKER_05And you must.
SPEAKER_03I do too. My dog is doing something, but you must let me let me do those.
SPEAKER_05I need to talk to y'all about that.
SPEAKER_03My dog is barking at something. Let me do the Hulu one first. Because even like on like the the Black Girls should read, because I think somebody had pointed about the scammer, they even said the Hulu one's like a little lighter than it is the YouTube one. So I need to get let me get my cortisol, my nervous system all relaxed, yeah, and then I'll watch it.
SPEAKER_04Gotcha. Because I um I listened to the friend zone. Y'all know we are podcasters who like podcasts, and that's like one of my favorite ones, and they were talking about that for like 20 minutes straight, and I was like, okay, now I need to go watch it. I have to go watch it the way they were talking about it. Yes.
unknownOh my god.
SPEAKER_05Very good. It was very good. I mean, and the set, I don't want to spoil it for y'all, but just please watch it. Okay.
SPEAKER_03I think no, I would give it a 4.5 out of 5, too. Because it was I think I I read it first, and I kept telling you guys to like I needed you guys to read it because I was stressed out on my own for a whole bit. And I was like, there was literally parts in the book where I had to like put it down because it was like triggering me so much. But I that's what I like. That's what I like when an author does that, like to give me that type of type of reaction. Give it to me. I mean, if it's if it's any idea, I read her book Grown when it first came out, and that's like what five, six years ago. And this is my first book of hers that I've read since then. So if you know the span of time, because like now this is too much, and then I'm gonna leave it alone, and then I pick it back up. But it was, I would give it a 4.5 out of 5, too, because she she wrote the crap out of that, and just even like having the idea of having to immerse yours yourself as a writer into that mindset, like uh yuck. Oh my god, I can't yuck literally.
SPEAKER_04I think I would give it four stars. That might have been what I gave it the first time, too, but I still think it would be four stars for me. Thoroughly enjoyed it, but it uh to me it missed the mark in a couple of little things. I think our biggest one was like the ending, because what happened to everybody?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, there is.
SPEAKER_03See, I already blocked that out of my brain. Oh, yeah. It was really fast.
SPEAKER_05I definitely blacked out.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, maybe, maybe they did it. Maybe, maybe not. Because I think I think she was either pregnant during that time where she was writing or she was coming like or postpartum, I don't remember. But it's giving very much okay. Let me finish this because I got other stuff. Hurry up and buy. Hurry up and buy. Yeah, so I mean I forgot all about the ending. I just blocked that out of my brain. Oh well. Okay, that's better. Okay. And then what would what would be who would you recommend it for? Like who is this book for?
SPEAKER_05I would say this is definitely a young adult one for me. I would recommend it to kids going off to college just so they don't accidentally get into college. Right. Put this in a little survival kit, because yeah, yes. Yeah, nobody's gonna be able to do that. Don't let nobody in your dorm or you're gonna end up in a cold.
SPEAKER_04Basically, yeah, I put that and then somebody who was starting with mystery and thriller. I find this is a good one to kind of stick your big toe in, just kind of test the waters. Yes, yes, that's a good one.
SPEAKER_03And I will say, like, mmm, yeah, I was gonna say the same thing. The people who are like who are just starting with mystery just want to ease into it. I don't even know if easing into it's the right one. She kind of what what is the what is she dropped? I don't even remember that his name, like that's how traumatizing it was. It begins with a D.
SPEAKER_04Girl, I remember because I think one of the questions, yeah, was who you want to fight? Devante. I want to fight David.
SPEAKER_03Okay, it's a good idea. Yes. Oh god. Okay, so um let me see. Oh, this is a good one too. Would you reread it?
SPEAKER_05No. No. Absolutely the fuck not. I was stressed the entire time.
SPEAKER_03It was good, it was good.
SPEAKER_05That's not a that's not a redo.
SPEAKER_03Okay, okay, not a redo. Okay. The next one. Um I'm Medusa. This is one that I had an opinion change after the recording. So I think with I'm Medusa. I think I would give it a four. I think I gave it three and a half in the last episode, I think. Maybe. I don't remember. But I think I would give it a four. And I would say that my opinion changed. Because one one topic of conversation that I feel like we spoke about with this one, and then I think with our vicious oaths, is the difference in writing when somebody who writes young adult and they go to adult novels. I think as writers, we could all say that it's hard. It's really hard. So having more grace for Iana 2, like with it, is like, okay, you're writing a completely different person, essentially. And I think the book gave me what I what I would have what I would have liked it to have. I think maybe a more adult Medusa. Yeah, but I think I really do appreciate just what it what it was, because it really was a coming of age. Like, was she dumb? Yes, but she was and her parents taught her nothing. Yeah. And how many, how many grown adult women are still out here that might get swept off their feet by a man who presents himself one way?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And they're really it happens. So yeah, I think my opinion changed on that. I think I think with this one too, again, a four. And with that new perspective, I think I would read it again. To me. Okay.
SPEAKER_04Okay. I will give it a three. Would I read it again? No. But I feel like just simply because going back to some of the things that we said, I it just because I'm like, I'm a deuce. We always hear about it. I think like very strong hair made of snakes, and that she went through all these trials. And the trials to me were very easy things that not saying that anybody could do, but I feel like they would be in like a children's book, like weaving a basket, braiding that's a wonderful skill to have. But like, you about to be out here going to war. You ain't gonna be braiding a hair, like you can be killing these people, like so. Those were the things that kind of was like, eh. But yeah, definitely give it a three.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I am going to agree with that because I mean it um it I think it would be something I would appreciate better if I was younger. Um, it just it just came off like it was a you know, like a teen focus, yeah. Um and teenage meme might like it better. Adult me was just kind of annoyed the whole time, to be honest. You know, it wasn't a bad one though. It wasn't, but it was just like from the eyes of an adult looking at the things that a child is doing. That's really all it is.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that makes sense.
SPEAKER_05And like, girl, why are you but she's a kid, of course. That's true, and and like you said, you know, there's women who still follow for the butt, yeah. That that's my that's my take on that still.
SPEAKER_03I think it's a good cautionary tale too for like women and of course young girls, because one again, men ain't shit, and not every girl is a girl's girl, Athena. That part can't trust anybody, and then one question I had too, because I feel like I feel like in mythological worlds this is easy to ask, but where do you think you would survive in this world?
SPEAKER_05Paco's Paco said yes, Paco absolutely you know what Paco trying to get out of the damn free. He ain't I don't know what his problem is today. Paco is my cat, y'all. He he thinks he's a grown man, but anyways, um, you know, I think I could, I think I'd be good for court life if I was a little young goddess. I would act right. I would be in my little uh island with my little people, and I'd treat them nicely. We'd get along, we have a little ball here and there. I'm I'm I'm straight. Yeah, don't send me to war. Right. No, I don't want that part. I'm running down.
SPEAKER_04A wall. Don't come looking ready. We out. We out.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god. I love how your answer made me laugh though, because for as you're saying that, the only thing I'm thinking of for me is what I survive at E Guess, but you know, I feel like you already know what I'm gonna say. What am I gonna say? You gonna say as soon as it gets hard, you take it yourself. Well, not that. Well that no, well maybe because I do say what the apocalypse, but like ancient for the apocalypse, okay. I was gonna say me and Stanel, me and her sister, the the freaking woman hit the man-hater over there. Oh, you have you have a penis. I'm not saying the option.
SPEAKER_05Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry for it.
SPEAKER_03I mean, I do always say when stuff gets looked at. I t I tell my husband all the time when the apocalypse comes, take me out. Because one, I can't run that fast. My cardio is not that good. And once these glasses break, I can't see. So just put me out of my misery. But what I was gonna say is no, if I was in this world, make me a gorgon. Me and stuff I listen, I know like Manusa had like an issue, like, I don't want to kill these people, but no, so I was like, no, I know you gotta dig by your gone. Me and her. That's how with that power, yes, I would survive. On a mission, without it, I don't know. I think without it, I would just be uh I think I would be like you. I think I would just be like, you know, just gallivanting around as a goddess and be nice, which I think is hard because they were all terrible. Yeah, but yeah, I think I would do that.
SPEAKER_04I think I would want to stay, like stay essentially where Medusa was at and have the ability and the freedom to go back and forth to live the life that I want to live, opposed to following all their rules.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. That was a good one. What was the next one?
SPEAKER_04Personal librarian.
SPEAKER_03Personal librarian. One answer that question, no, I would not survive in that world. I don't want to.
SPEAKER_05No, immediately no. God no, yeah, no, don't take me past the sample.
SPEAKER_04Let me get me walking on my little afro and my little yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yes, yeah, give me that. Kick a foot up, you know. That's about as far back as I can go.
SPEAKER_03Now that we had a few weeks to reflect on the personal librarian, would you change your rating? And would you would you change your rating? Has your opinion changed on it? And would you recommend it? Or who would you recommend it to?
SPEAKER_05I can't remember what I rated it originally, but I feel like I probably gave it like a 3.5. But I I would give it a 4. I would give it a 4 still. Um I think I enjoyed the book. So that's the first thing. I enjoyed the book. I think there were certain things, some things that um I had issue with on a personal level that would have influenced my brain to be lower prior to today. But with some distance from actually reading it, it was a good book. It was a good book, and I cannot judge the actions of a black woman during the time because at the end of the day, you just don't know. You don't know until you dare, you know. And who's to say if I were in that position, I would not make the same choices. I don't know that. Um, and it was it was an amazing experience to learn about her because I'm still just very shocked that there's no movie, right? There's no I mean, can you imagine a movie about get Tessa Thompson? I know, I know. No, yeah. Or what's the no, not her name.
unknownWhat is it?
SPEAKER_05Well, I was well, you know, maybe, maybe, yeah. What's uh who Mary from Sinners? No, that's a white lady. That's a whole white lady.
SPEAKER_03Is she is she all white white black grandma? She had a black great great grandparent. Oh, something like that.
SPEAKER_05Damn.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that's a white woman.
SPEAKER_05Oh, I thought it was at least a grandparent. Maybe.
SPEAKER_03I don't know.
SPEAKER_05Where Halsey at? Halsey all the way, I know that's not a right way to put that in the CD scene.
SPEAKER_01I don't know.
SPEAKER_05Y'all, I was drinking way before we started recording, by the way. So please excuse me. I'm just saying shit. Listen, you know, I didn't. Halsey is actually biracial, is what I probab what I meant to say.
SPEAKER_03Didn't you see? Did I send you the picture of Tyreek Withers and Chance Infinity that they're dating? The one from Yes. What was it? It was hold on. Let me see. Hold on. It was it made me laugh really hard because it was funny. Hold on. No, I started drinking too, so now I'm like scrolling up on my stuff. I'm like, oh my god. Hold on. Oh yeah, speaking of drinking, what does everybody have? Girl got some Stella Rose Peach as $11.99. Yeah we love a good Stella. It was okay, it was Chase Infinity and Tyreek Brothers are reportedly dating, and someone said they are they are achieving a level of biracial that hasn't been reached before. Oh silly. Oh my god, I love something. Tyreek is such a cutie. He is. I feel like he's really goofy, but like I wonder if his goofy. And like she is so she is the type of pretty to me that like I want to punch her in the face. Who is this? I don't know. Chase Infinity. She was in um one battle after another. I just said the picture in the group chat. Oh, yeah, she's gonna be. And then somebody I would say, because you you know how I am, as somebody who who stays on biracial and light-skinned people's necks all the time whenever they complain about something. I'm the first one to say, are they pretty or are they just light-skinned? Somebody said that in the comments that she was just light-skinned. I was like, no, I don't know. I think she like really is pretty.
SPEAKER_05I think she's actually pretty. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Really?
SPEAKER_05She did really good in the movie.
SPEAKER_03She did. She should have been nominated.
SPEAKER_04A Terry could be. She has really like what is the word, sultry eyes?
SPEAKER_03Yes. Yeah. What were we talking about? Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05You know what? Chase might be able to pass a little bit. I think she could.
SPEAKER_03What was who was she? Portuguese. I think she could.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04I think she could. We could do that. Or at least play one of the sisters. Because I think she was, as far as complexion-wise, she was the darker of the sisters. So maybe one of the sisters.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. What I get is you. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I don't remember what we said.
SPEAKER_04I gave it a I'm gonna give it a three. And I put in quotes, thanks for paving the way. Seriously, because when I think of like a librarian, I don't know why in my head that like anybody can be a librarian. And I'm sorry for my ignorance because I really had to look it up. It is a lot of steps to become a librarian. Like they have to go through so much. And I was like, wow, but it makes sense. You're dealing with all different types of literature and catalogs and resources and physical media and print, all types of stuff. So I take my hat off to them because I didn't realize that that much went into it. So I think that's really cool. And then yeah, I just I feel like a lot of it was centered around her relationship with him, and then her relationship with the other guy. I forgot his name, but he was already married, and I feel like he just wanted her good stuff. And it wasn't male-centered, it was really centered now that I think about it. I wanted it to be more around her because she was the one who was important. Like I know.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you know, now that she says that, that's very true. Like, we got snippets of her genius and snippets of her um her cunning in you know acquiring these manuscripts and these books. But it would have been nice to have more.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I wonder, I wonder if they did that because like those were the relationships that were like most publicized, and we really didn't know much, so maybe they had to like give us something.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Granted, I don't need to know about your romantic relationship with JP Morgan.
SPEAKER_05That right, I can oh yeah, that disgusted me. They could have left all of that out. I understand why they added it.
SPEAKER_04I guess they needed something to pull the readers in, but like you said, it was more about him and the touch and him calling and running to his office and waiting at his desk. Girl! Okay.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god. I think I think I would do a three. I'm just I'm trying to think if I've read historical fiction like that before, and I don't think I have. Like, granted, we did kindred, but like they have more sci-fi with history in it versus like an actual historical historical fiction based off of somebody. I think it's I think it's the same with what you said too, where it's like I can't judge what I can't even say I can't judge what she did, it was what her mom did.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And she went along with it.
SPEAKER_05She made that decision.
SPEAKER_03And you guys know I I harbor resentment and like irritation towards my great-grandmother for deciding to pass because it is like you're you're leaving your whole entire family behind and who you are and and for what. But also at the same time, it's like not fully understanding why you made that decision. So maybe something happened that you made that decision. But I guess it's that duality of like having that irritation and not understanding, but also understanding at the same time. Because we can't we don't know what we would do in that situation, and the deeper she got into it, it's like wow, like I I really can't tell anybody now. Like I'm in magazine covers, like I'm traveling all around. So if I say something, it'll just be messed up.
SPEAKER_04Everything's gonna crumble.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and the way she burned everything up, it's honestly a wonder that we even know. Right.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, exactly. I think the only thing that irritated me with the book is how much I think we talked about this in the episode too, where like she kept saying how much she was doing for like for women of color, or color what they said back then, colored women during that time. And it's like, are you are you really making that stride because no one knows anything?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's like you're here, but maybe the light's off. The light is off, nobody nobody knows.
SPEAKER_03Nobody knows, yeah. So I think I would recommend this book. I think I would recommend this one for people who are starting out in historical fiction because it's just enough history. It's not yes, it's not like two history, because obviously they they even said they had to make some stuff up. Yeah, so I think somebody, yeah, somebody's starting out. It was a good book, it was cute.
SPEAKER_05Um I think it's a good book club, yes. Yeah, yes, it was very thought-provoking, very, you know, drivesome conversation.
SPEAKER_04I agree.
SPEAKER_05Very good book club.
SPEAKER_04I agree. And somebody who wants to be a librarian, I feel like it did have good like information. Like, I feel like I learned something reading this book. Yes.
SPEAKER_05I'm gonna tell you, the nerd in me really enjoyed the parts where they were talking about the magazines. Because I was looking them up as I was. Yeah, because I was like, what is this? Yeah, and when they were talking about all the um Gutenberg Bibles he had, and I'm like, Yeah, I didn't know he had those. Yeah, very good. And yeah, it was very interesting.
SPEAKER_03I like that. I think I wonder, I think the library still exists back home, and I've never I never heard of it until this because I always knew about the of course the New York Public Library, which everybody knows, and then the Schoenberg Library in Harlem, which was created by like an um Afro-Puerto Rican man, but other than that, maybe because I never gave a crap about JP Morgan. So there's that. Yeah, next one. There's that. The next one. I think okay, the next one, all of our favorites, all of our favorites. I love it. I don't wish you well. I don't wish you well.
SPEAKER_04It was good.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, 10 out of 10. 10 out of 10. I would read it again. Who would I recommend it for? Everybody. I'm about to say everybody, everybody. Oh my god, it was so oh, no notes.
SPEAKER_05Like, oh my god, literally no notes. Like, I had no, there was nothing about that book that I didn't read, and I'm still saying it like I'm about to read through his entire text.
SPEAKER_03Yes, yes, like uh nothing else to say about it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I would read it again. I've never read a sus a suspense book again. Because I think what makes this uh I can't talk. What makes we all try to drink it too early? What makes a suspense book good is like not knowing what's happening. Yeah, but I feel like now it's gonna be a different read because like we know it's gonna happen, but we're just like waiting to get to it. Yeah, yes basically.
SPEAKER_05But you know what might be fun because I find like for example, movies when you watch a movie again, you know, there's some different things because you know the ending. I think it might be fun to reread for that reason because it's like okay, well, what did I miss that I didn't see that it was him or like when did his mask slip away and I didn't notice it?
SPEAKER_04Easy, and then I think the other main character was Price.
SPEAKER_03Price, yes, freezy. He did nothing wrong.
SPEAKER_04Freezy and I put for that one, I said play stupid games, win stupid prizes. I can describe the book.
SPEAKER_05That's pretty much what would you say, y'all. Speaking of winning a stupid prize, you know what I'm talking about. What you just said. Um, y'all, do y'all hear about that woman who shot the two lawyers at the way? Yes. Okay, for me, free her.
unknownWhat?
SPEAKER_03I didn't get to all like it's a she, I think her mom did her mom die because of acids. Somebody threw acid on her 90-something year old mom. And that's all I know after that, but I guess like she was just so like she was asking for help, like nobody was like helping her with it, and she was just so at her wit's end that she shot two lawyers. I think.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I think it was a male and a female, and I saw that.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, they were representing the city. I want to say it was Roseville. Roseville County, the judge in the case against the people, and apparently the woman who did it is the wife of a KKK leader. The judge not only threw out the case, but then allowed evidence to be destroyed.
SPEAKER_02Oh my god, free my lady.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that's crazy.
SPEAKER_04That is nuts. Free her, and it's like stuff like that. We always hear about it, but for it to be right in our backyard is crazy. Because, like I said, I heard that and I was like, Okay, let me check and make sure it's not anybody that I like know or whatever, like that. And I feel like in my head, I was just like, Okay, everybody I know is safe. And I just kept going, now I'm about to look it up.
SPEAKER_05Because that's crazy. Look it up, honey. It's it's crazy, but like when we were talking about this book, we literally said, Rakia, this could be any city in Carolina today. Yeah, and look, it's still happening, still happening today.
SPEAKER_03And it really does bet that question of like what is that called? But I don't know if it'd be like vigilante justice, I guess. Kinda, yeah. Yeah, because like you know, we we know that the justice system gets stuff wrong most of the time. All the time, all the time, and it's just like well, uh what do you want these what do you want these people to do, especially when you know like in a corrupt system?
SPEAKER_05Listen, black people got all the grace in the world, but everybody has a and like I saw.
SPEAKER_03I would say don't look up the pictures of the of her mom though. I don't want that. I saw it, I was what because uh with the one I I saw a video yesterday on TikTok where somebody was going deeper into it and she did say like trigger warning with it. I don't know what I guess my brain short circuited, and I saw it and I was like, that's a human being, like that's it because it didn't look like a person it's one of those things where it's like for nobody to have been like held accountable for that, you know. I might crash out too. Yeah, yeah, and my mama, yeah, I might crash out too. No, yeah, and I feel like a lot of these things need to be taken into consideration because everything everything has a cause and an effect, yeah.
SPEAKER_04And she can temporary insanity. Y'all know I love some law and order, baby. Please temporary insanity basically out of your mind when it happened.
SPEAKER_05No, if her lawyer don't, then they're temporary insanity so clear.
SPEAKER_03And it's even like when people see okay, and you and you know, like most people agree with stuff like that because let a prisoner murk somebody in jail for being a child predator. Nobody nobody bats an eye. There's like, oh yeah, okay, so you you know most people agree with stuff like that.
SPEAKER_05Matter of fact, they might put money on.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but so I mean, I don't know. So like it it and it's crazy that that happened so close to home. Because was it in Roseville or was it in Raleigh, like downtown Raleigh? No, it was downtown Rollins. Dang. That's that's so sad. I'm gonna I'm definitely gonna keep it.
SPEAKER_05Well, and the thing is they're they didn't pass, so oh yeah, because I think one's in stable condition, the other one is what? Hold on. I don't like still in front of the condition. Where is I know they live in such in my head, but they'll be okay.
SPEAKER_03Where is how far is that from here? How far is Rosewell? Okay, so I don't know. That's only 20 minutes away.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, Roseville is not far. Rosewood's still considered like Raleigh.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I guess that's why they have it here.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And I think that that's what's interesting, is like when you're because I've even I even saw like TikTok comments where people are like, oh, like I heard the story, but I didn't hear like what you said to like all like the deep dive of it. Oh, I didn't hear anything, anything else. It's a four-year-old case, too.
SPEAKER_05Nuts and the thing is what's so frustrating about stuff like this is if a black person sprayed water on somebody too big going behind the bars. Yeah, that's a that's the south for you. That's America for you. I didn't even say the south because it doesn't. It's air where that's America for you.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's crazy. Uh huh. I'm looking at it now. Okay, I did 3440, 3520. But okay, so the next one. I do want to hear because you are here for the last episode. So I want to hear your opinion, Drake. Yes, on our our vicious. We'll get into this a little more when we have like a little DNF section. But as of right now, let's stick with the same exact questions. Like, I would say, well, actually, let's stick with this. Would you survive? Would you survive in this world?
SPEAKER_05It didn't look like many people. I might I would try to find me one of them little dragon uh birds. Right is one of those cooking. Otherwise, it's not looking good. I'm not over.
SPEAKER_04I'm in the back, the very, very bag. Like right.
SPEAKER_05I just wanted to come to the body now.
SPEAKER_03What's that freaking quote? Oh my god, it's reminded me. Hold on. Oh my god, the Bellin No Chase video. Yeah, you can't even go to the Belly Note Chase video. But you can put a wedding. Literally. If you can go to Bella Noches and what the hell could you get to close that Bella Noches? I don't know what that is. But it doesn't exist anymore. I love that video so much. Literally, when anything ever bad happens, that's what I say. If you can go to Bellanoches, then what the hell could you go?
SPEAKER_04Y'all should have left there when it was it.
SPEAKER_03Should it be beefing at the wedding?
SPEAKER_05And then why do you beeping at somebody's wedding anyway? To the point where somebody ripped your drinking.
SPEAKER_03That low-key happened at my brother's wedding back on the shooting. But they they didn't they did jump somebody back. Stuff happens, stuff happens. You know, there's drinks flowing, people know how to act.
SPEAKER_05Oh my gosh. I'm sorry, y'all. But do y'all remember that TikTok? Well, I don't know if y'all ever seen it, but if you haven't, it just about it. When you said it was acting up that TikTok, and you said niggas. I need it. I have to find it in my videos.
SPEAKER_03I'm sending that as soon as we're seeing that would be that would be the funny TikTok for your. No, but part of me, like, I think that would be a situation, like I don't know if you want to take me out, take me out, but also I don't know if you want to like find me a man like Malachi. You know, maybe I could stick around for a little bit.
SPEAKER_04You won't fight for me, babe. You won't fight for me. Basically.
SPEAKER_03Let it let it so I would I would do that if I had if I had a Malachi.
SPEAKER_05I mean, if you got a Malachi on your side, you might be a little sad.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, but the other one, I forgot the other dude's name. The one, the evil one. Um, because he became his wife anyway. Yeah, I ain't even write him down. How far? So like I would say I think from what we have read, because I do plan on finishing it eventually. Same. Eventually it could be next. Because it wasn't bad. Eventually it could be it was just low. It could be next week, it could be next year. I don't know, but it's gonna happen. I think I I would rate it a three from what I've read so far. Could the writing be a little bit different? Yes. Spicy scenes ten out of ten. 10 out of 10. That still that like courtroom party scene, like literally. I'm what I'm reading that book. I'm sitting on my couch in my kiddo, my jaw is dropped the whole time, and every time something else happens, I was like literally mouth kind of open.
SPEAKER_05That's funny. That was ambitious.
SPEAKER_03And I guess I would recommend this for like I think I'd recommend it for people who want to read romanticy but don't necessarily want what are those the popular ones by that white author, Avatar? Yeah, I would if you don't want to read those, and I can't sit here and say it's a black version of Avatar. I never read Avatar, don't really have any desire to read it, but I would say it's for people who maybe don't really want to read that and want to do this instead, and it is a standalone too. So there's that, yeah.
SPEAKER_04And I feel like people who thoroughly enjoy world building, I feel like in every fantasy romanticity, it has to be some type of world building because you have to immerse yourself where they're at, but you have to really, really like world building to really be able to get into this.
SPEAKER_03And I wonder if she did it so much because it is one book. Because I I think typically fantasy it's multiple, so you have time to build a world, whereas when it was I think that's maybe why we had a hard time because it was so much for once.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it was a it was a lot of information, and like I really enjoyed it because I do love world build building type books. Um, and I think I I said this in the episode, but like it did remind me kind of like Game of Thrones type thing. Game of Thrones was very uh very messy, lots of warring families and factions and stuff like that. But they just looked like us and that was. Um I I think I I may have rated it lower last time, I can't remember to be honest. But I would rate it four out of five because I I was enjoying it, I just didn't have time to finish it. Um but I will finish it because I enjoyed it. And after the first like chapter or two, after I understand kind of where I'm at and what's going on, I got into it way better. Okay, okay. And once I got, you know, built a little relationship with the characters, I was able to, you know, immerse myself a little bit. Gotcha.
SPEAKER_03What about you? How far did you get in it, Rikia?
SPEAKER_04I think I was maybe like 35, 37-ish.
SPEAKER_03So you got to the the party scene where they were at the party.
SPEAKER_04I think I was right or right at the party scene because I now after y'all was talking about this little what's the name, I might just need to click through so I can read what y'all was talking about.
SPEAKER_05I didn't really get to that part.
SPEAKER_04Okay, get to that part.
SPEAKER_03Let us know exactly what it is.
SPEAKER_04Honestly, it's supposed to be rainy today here and Raleigh all week. So I put on like reading. Yes.
SPEAKER_03What is my and I because you know I go on I go on a good read sometimes where it's like whenever I I read a book and I'm like okay, like because I don't like feeling I don't like being alone on an island. Like I need to know how the people are thinking. And a lot of people, someone was saying how like Malachi was misogynistic with how he was with her, and I don't think so because in her world, women didn't have any rights, whereas his they're pretty much the same. They only so he sees her as like his equal. So I don't I don't think he saw her as he was an ear, yeah. She was she was she, of course he was. He was a mess, yeah, basically, yeah, but like I I enjoyed him. So when I what did I text you guys one day? I was like, oh, he's kind of crazy, like yeah. Well, I don't know.
SPEAKER_04I like my book man, book man a little crazy. I need a dance.
SPEAKER_03Honestly, but god forbid, let Jeremy act like that. Excuse me. Look, who are you talking to? You're hurting my feelings. No, like literally take it. Let's take a give it a second. What's that TikTok mean where it's like, oh, when you're when your husband talks like you're a book boyfriend, and then they're like, I will knock all this shit over, please. Like, oh my god. Now it's funny because I'm gonna I'm gonna talk about our last one. What's the last one? Time my dream. Let's go, let's go on to the awards. Okay, before we get into the DNF. So I'm gonna read this off. Okay, character awards. I think we can all agree the main character we would fight Devontae from The Scammer, yes, beat up immediately and Vanessa.
SPEAKER_04Vanessa asked me to beat up too.
SPEAKER_03They could both get beat up. Um, she might be first.
SPEAKER_04Okay, because she she was a ringleader, which was surprising. Yes, and like you pretended to be.
SPEAKER_03And maybe controversial, the main character of the scammer. I already forgot her name because again Jordan. Jordan. I think I'll fight her too, because at the end it's revealed that you know it, you knew everything that you were doing. You had this all planned out to a team, you were in people's lives. danger yeah so you can whatever so you know what all three of them all three of them well he's a tree came a little smash initially initially I was gonna say Athena but like that's like the goddess of war so probably I might I had her to the might yeah like I probably speak like a part of like yeah I'll say something mean and then she'll get aggressive like oh just kidding so we have Devontae Vanessa and Jordan um oh wait wait um who else Christ's brother oh yeah yes oh yeah from I still can't really tell that that person I can't see that scene where he came in I'm sorry to get away from me get away from me please because what and the sheriff the sheriff can get beat up too oh yeah yeah sheriff too yeah them too half that time yeah that's true who else fuck honest yeah oh and Anne Anne from the personal librarian jp morgan's daughter yes because she was being extra too soon one of you gets that award who else another one from uh personal librarian the siblings and that mama because ungrateful 100 so you all get awards for character um love y'all get slapped first congratulations love we haven't really that much romance love interest of the season for me I would say I have two Malachi Malachi is one and what's this man from the tell me I'm a dream Kofi Sucis yeah yeah love interest because the minute she said wavy locks tattoos piercings I was like oh yes yes please thank you so those two are mine um I said Bridget and Silas she was the one whose husband was ex-husband was a jack in the box and I like the fact that Silas was with the shit I said he doing it for the plot and I liked it yes yes I like Silas yes um okay mine's are gonna be okay so what is it what was his name Alexander he was the childhood crush that they got by no that was Patrick or PewDiePie's a cutie Patrick is gonna be mine because he that's just so sweet and I love him with his little green and then Malachi because most delusional character for me I would say to me I would say it's Medusa just because she she really had her like head in the again not her fault. Artemis the food's not gonna come out you ate at eight o'clock baby sorry my cat she has automatic theater and she's like literally touching it you ate all your food I would say I would say Medusa no fault of her own but yeah I say Jordan is mine too I think it's a tough or maybe too because Jordan I don't know what Jordan was thinking I still don't know what she was thinking.
SPEAKER_04Medusa like you said it's not necessarily her fault she was raised to be naive but them too this is easy biggest red flag everything about him them and it I still think about that mud tea to this day because why would y'all drink that why was y'all drinking it like Devontae with a thousand percent and oh my god oh my god um ooh okay I have a tie for this one character who deserved better I got three um Cami I think she's the one that maybe or maybe didn't die in Scammer um the oh god what's the name of the guy that the price is trying to investigate who killed he didn't actually kill anybody Deuce Deuce yes Deuce deserve better yes and ooh I got four what's her face I'm forgetting everybody's name um I know our whole purpose is to is to freaking drink but god the one the one from the person librarian she deserved better because again that's I blame her mom for a lot of her stuff. Belle?
SPEAKER_03Yeah yeah Belle yes I think that's it for me those three who deserved better mine is gonna be doing I think of all of the characters we read this season so far he's the one that I wanted to my heart he wanted to do different and then the smart I think I'm gonna go Izzy okay I feel like I get that and I feel like it started at home because his parents were trash oh his mom even when he came back to visit his mom so pissed me off yes and coming from the mom parent standpoint again Jordan because her parents are trash definitely trash and this I feel like is gonna be maybe a little controversy but the dad from the personal librarian I feel like he deserved better because for the mom to come from this super prominent family and he's trying to do right make something of himself make something of his family and for her to just kind of make that choice and then it was kind of like a domino effect for their life yeah okay yeah that makes sense I very much agree with that one I didn't even know at all and then for him to go off marry somebody else I think I told you last time his great great grandson's a whole schmuck yeah all types of crazy stuff yeah it's embarrassing domino effect all she had to do was just you know but yeah oh and even like with with the accolades that he had he she could still been a good like librarian just anyway that could be a whole thing and like DC they were the a super prominent family like what they could have had a good life anyway but like ugh but okay couple with the best chemistry I'm gonna say Malachi I forgot the girl's name what's her name because of the K right am I wrong made me laugh um yeah I'm totally we sorry we so sorry yeah I just never remember y'all should know this by now though I don't remember no by Khija Khija's Khija yes Malachi and Khadija yes even though they're fighting the chemistry stop fighting with each other and I would say honestly I would say everybody in Tell Me I'm not dreaming yeah you can't pick yeah I could go for that my favorite was Patrick and Amy I know you like I love Amy isn't that your favorite that's your favorite romance trope is like friends yeah you love you I love it they were just so like you know like imagine you like the love of your life that you've known you was gonna marry since you was little and y'all don't get to but then you come back to like yeah and again there's their spice their spicy theme was chef's kiss chef's kiss yeah look at we all like very adventurous very adventurous very scary but still like you gotta like trust them you gotta trust your person to be able to do some of the stuff that they was doing but she didn't trust that's the thing she said let me find me a stranger find me a whole stranger that I don't know and this is what we're doing and her fellow like okay I know someone like it's fine well maybe not trust maybe discernment you gotta have a lot of discernment for that because you can meet a stranger you know sometimes people you meet they be weird as shit like he listened Amy was ready to go from the beginning of the book okay she was with the bodyguards she was ready yes they said they lyrics said big head said stop and please please yes and I heard about you baby Amy say she moved it down that would embarrass me honestly that would embarrass me a little bit she didn't know that's true that's she she didn't care she's not ashamed oh my god unapologetically herself let's skip the book awards because I feel like we already know like what again like what everybody should read I don't wish you well best world building um our vicious oaths stuff like that now this would be fun because it'll make us think about like the podcast awards for our episodes okay let's start with let's start with the hardest one book that caused the biggest disagreement which I don't think yeah I don't I mean I feel like so far it might be I'm a deucer yeah yeah yeah I can go with that yeah I would say I'm a decer for that one let me see um the funniest episode to record I think this one right now is our funniest one I would say this one yeah and scammer I feel like we was cracking up yes I think do we gotta do this we have to drink at least an hour before we record yeah because I think that's what happened we were we were late already yeah what was the one that we filmed and I was like hi was it i Medusa I think it was like two it might have been I don't know I think Abedusa was one because I was forgetting everything and then was it I don't wish you well I don't know I think it was I don't wish you well because I remember a damn thing about I was like okay let's go to next segment a little quickie quick because we don't like talking bad about books y'all don't like talking about bad about books y'all don't I don't care I don't care there is there was oh hold on they made an SNL UK version and to me it's funny than the real one but there is a sketch and there's one can there's one Casper who's literally he looks like the British black version of Keenan like when I watched I was like is that Kenan like what the hell but he was interviewing he was interviewing for a movie and I forgot what it was called so he was interviewing these actress for it and then he was talking about the movie he's like yeah but how could the movie stop though what happened and basically author hey so why why did why was this shit what what happened for the DNF corner for me I have I have two I have our vice oaths which again I am gonna finish and tell me I'm not dreaming which for me personally I I think I I think I might finish but I don't know there's a greater chance that I'll finish our vice oaths versus tell me I'm not dreaming so I would say do you guys finish the the tell me I'm not dreaming right finished I'm like 74% I think yeah okay so I would let me start why why did I DNF for our vest or so I think it was just I think it was too long and I wasn't in the right headspace for it because you know I love a long book. You guys make fun of me all the time I love a big book and I'll eat it up but I think it was just like I think it was just a lot I think for Tell Me I'm not dreaming what helped me was realizing there were little novellas within one big novel because I for it felt so like stag what I don't know if stagnant's the right word kind of chopped yeah and then when I realized it was a novel I was like oh okay so they're meant to be little baby short stories.
SPEAKER_04Um for me with that one I just didn't like the writing that much it was more telling versus showing and I don't like told stuff um so there's that Arbish Els I will I will finish I will finish it for Malachi I will finish it for Malachi and I'll finish because Tia things somebody is the bad guy that I don't know is the bad guy but I want to see if she's right okay but yeah I think I'm right so for you guys what made you not if you finished them or if you didn't finish them what you made you not finish them I would say for their vicious oaths like I said it was just I think I'm the opposite of you two like I read way more fantasy than I do like um not scratch that way more romance than I do fantasy and other things I think the world building takes a minute for me to actually like not necessarily grasp because I understand it but it's just it means a lot more on and a lot of that was it was it was a little it was a little repetitive I was like okay but I don't think I'll finish that I'm gonna read past for the spicy scene because yeah you need yes you gotta get to the main one and I need your reaction because I can't even lie this is so embarrassing I bookmarked it just because I got one back if people want to go back to read it one day send me the bookmark so let me find a channel set too because put it in the channel yeah put it in the chat also here a lot to you and then because that was I mean that was a phenomenal scene for kid you gotta read it and then you just start yeah so it was mostly the world building for me that was a lot and it was going to take me getting used to and I feel like that's just me needing to read more fantasy books but um yeah and then I I don't think I'm gonna finish the dreaming book I mean I've like I said 74% but I just I don't want to join me the way you want me to join you on the romance side join me on the fantasy side look it's I need a good good good one I need a good good one okay I'm I'm gonna recommend one it's okay how long because y'all we don't be playing with say at least she like her book stick and thirsty baby maybe it's about it's about five something five it's called the poppy wars by R of Kwong I've heard of that she wrote something else that everybody talked about katabasis no she has the poppy wars katabasis yellow yellow face is her big one that's what it is that's what it is yeah yes yeah and yellow face one of my friends read that that's one of her but that's a book that my friend reads almost every single year oh wow so I do want to read that I'm gonna have to read too I love her some people say she reads like a textbook I say you don't know how to read so that just me I love her I would say try poppy wars poppy was really good I have to do katabasis and then she has another one called Babble I think but I do want to read yellow face because I just I love her so I want to read that too yeah what about you what about you too because you no you finished you didn't finish our vicious oaths but you did finish the Tell Me I'm not dreaming.
SPEAKER_05Okay yeah our Vicious Oaths I I would probably finish I'm gonna say probably because I got a million books on readings and I just I'd be wanting to read I'd be wanting to start something I'd be ready to go but I was into it so I'm gonna finish it at some point um I did end up finishing Tell Me I'm not dreaming um and honestly because it was it was a little palate printing it was an easy read it was a quick read um was it a little muddled with the writing and the setup yes um but you know I don't mind reading books like that sometimes I've read several novellas that were kind of just on but it was a good story and I can get rid of that um and that's kind of how I felt about tell me I'm not dreaming it was it was cute it was some cute little stories and that's just about what makes you in general what makes you want to quit a book personally like because I think for me I'm getting more comfortable DNFing it DNFing stuff and my manager the other day he was like can you can you return books? I was like yes if I don't like this book I'm gonna get my money back books are expensive so what makes you if you what makes you want to quit a book or like if you're someone who like or are you guys people who like no like I'm gonna I'm gonna finish it I'm gonna push through I'm a push through okay I'm gonna push through it type person and I'm always I've always been like that like even if I don't like something I'm gonna just I'm gonna I'm gonna finish it anyway and I'm like that even with movies a bit movie can be terrible but I'm gonna just watch it just to see what happens and that's usually what it is for me.
SPEAKER_03I just want to see what happens I feel I'm the exact opposite I have been utilizing my free will a lot lately if I don't like it next next I don't say after listen y'all know you know I'm gonna bring up after butcher and blackbird oh my god I pushed through that and I was you know how I feel I was pissed my god I saw one of her books I saw one of her books today at the bookstore you I tell I tell you I turned that shit around I was like no no it's ridiculous but I think ever since then I think it's the same way you guys might feel like yeah I don't I don't have to finish this I have to do it and sometimes even like for for the podcast at first I was like no I'm gonna push through I'm like no you know what it'll make for an interesting perspective because I feel like we should keep that going too yeah because if I don't want to finish I don't want to if we don't like it but I think some I used to be pushed through because I'm just like alright it's gonna it's gonna get better eventually I don't know where but now a super long book I will say if it's very long I'm I might not if I'm not into it at that point but I think most of the books that I end up like eh not liking like that they'd be kind of on the shorter side so I'd be like okay I can finish this in a day or two and move on to something I do like but a long book I can count on maybe one hand how many books I've done so good. That's I think I'm just starting to DNF now because I think with our vicious oaths because I said I was gonna DNF it in the beginning because I just wasn't feeling it but then you told me to keep doing it and I kept going and then I got to that scene and I said okay so let's see let's see and you know and I was like I wanted to love because you know I am an enemies to lovers girl down so I think it got better to me once Khadija and Malachi like actually got together yes I would read the scene right now but I'm not gonna do it and last one ooh I think okay we kind of answered this can a book recover from a bad beginning I said yes it could because sometimes it takes a second if I think about it in like TV shows okay TV shows ABBA Elementary first season kind of okay first couple episodes it's there but then after a while it has to find its footing I think and I think and I think it's I think with last season pretty much every book that we read started off at like a 10 almost yeah I think one that took us we did yeah last season we did this one we're kind of it's like well we know it's let's go find you a home honey um a lot of white refrigerators listen I'm okay there is I kinda honestly ever this one I love I love The Real Househouse of Atlanta that's one of my favorite shows I know do most of them still live in Atlanta now probably not but I used to I just listen oh my god anyway Now let's do before we get into the Black Romance Book Fest. Let's talk about really quickly the second half of the season. Because we're taking a little break, guys. We're taking a summer break. Like we said, life is lifing. It's been a lot. But I don't know if Rikia, you said this when we were recording or before, we're proud of us. We're proud of us we were able to do this. Because this time this was hard this year. But it was. Yes, we have four books lined up. We are starting. We're taking a month break when we're gone for June. But season two, episode what, seven? Our premiere is gonna be Kwan Mills, y'all. Quan the infamous. I am going to read a Quan Mill from season one. I'm gonna say we gotta do, we gotta do it. And we're gonna be reading this Hogar Roaches in the group. I think we do.
SPEAKER_04I'm excited.
SPEAKER_03I'm excited. Yeah. Listen for T. The minute you said that there's a chapter from the roaches' point of view. Ciao! I'm ready. Oh my god. And what watch his books be good too? Like I said they probably are ready to go.
SPEAKER_05That's what they say. Listen, the in the book groups that I'm in on Facebook, several people, and not a few, okay. Several people have said, yes, his books got crazy ass titles, crazy premises, but the books be actually good. I'm I'm I want to see books.
SPEAKER_03I want to see books. We have we have that, we have Outdrawn. I'm excited. Very excited for that. And then in August, we have Reformatory from by Tinan Reed. Tanan Reed Girl. And Juni by Aaron Aaron Crosby. Aaron Crosby. Aaron Crosby. I didn't look this up. You know about Juni. It's all really talking about the hell I'm talking about. So we have those four coming up. I'm very excited about those. So like I I think out of all those four, I feel like we could all say my most anticipated read is the so good roaches in her crib. I might start reading the road trip down to Atlanta. I'm probably gonna start reading it in the back of the car. I'm gonna tell them this.
SPEAKER_05Yo, we should see if they got uh an audio. Yes!
SPEAKER_03Oh my god, that would be okay. Well, okay, so I'm gonna do that after we get off the road. What what genre do you want us to do more of for the second half?
SPEAKER_05For me, sci-fi.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Okay, yeah. That's my favorite.
SPEAKER_05We haven't had it, and I don't think we've actually done it. Well, Skyfold except for Kenji.
SPEAKER_03Well, Skyfold Elephants kind of sci-fi, kind of.
SPEAKER_05I would say yeah. I would say yeah.
SPEAKER_03Okay, sci-fi, we could do sci-fi, okay? What else?
SPEAKER_04I want to do urban romance.
SPEAKER_03Yes, yes, okay.
SPEAKER_04Yes, yes, yes.
SPEAKER_03Sci-fi, urban romance. You know I'm a fiction girly. I love some good old fiction. So I love that. So I think we could add those three to it, and then I like scary stuff.
SPEAKER_05We can do a spooky book.
SPEAKER_03I guess reformatory and junior are kind of both. Reformatory goes scary.
SPEAKER_05I'm gonna tell you that right now. I ain't even ready yet, but I just know it's an anime. She, yeah, yeah. She has spooky.
SPEAKER_03I still want you guys to read Immortal Dark. Oh I have it, I haven't have not read it. No, no, no, no, no. I ate it up so much because I love vampires.
SPEAKER_04I love vampires, and that's crazy because I do I like the originals and all that. Like, that's my jam.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I love it.
SPEAKER_04One of my homegirls, she read it and she said she really liked it too. I'm gonna stop playing.
SPEAKER_03So good. Oh my god. And then it's pretty. It is such a pretty book. I want that to be a movie. Yeah, it's pretty. Oh god, it's so good. The main character, she's gonna piss you off a little bit because I'm very because you know again, enemies to lovers. Stop fighting this man, my god. Just please.
SPEAKER_04Beef, please. Give it to you.
SPEAKER_03Basically, just give it in. Come on. What um what tropes are you tired of seeing? I feel like we don't I feel like we don't cover a lot of tropes, really. Not really.
SPEAKER_05And you know, I don't necessarily I don't necessarily have one that I don't know because I feel like there's so many different ways to do tropes in the first one.
SPEAKER_02That's true.
SPEAKER_05The only one I'm like, oh gosh, okay. There's enemies to love. No, I'm like I like those. I don't I don't like I don't dislike it, but it's just like I can't be nice to you if you was everywhere. It's the sexual tension it's very Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Like I can't have no sexual tension with somebody that's mean to me. Oh my god. But that's just that's just like that. I don't dislike, I don't read about it, but like that's my own.
SPEAKER_04And you said your favorite is friends celebrities, right? Friends, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's cute or whatever, it's fine.
SPEAKER_02I think those three, right?
SPEAKER_03Because I think for friends tobers, it's just like that one for me is like, oh my god, can you just like get together already? Actually, you know what you would like? It's white people to you though. But it's a movie, but it's a book, it's a it's a movie based off a book. It's on that fence People We Meet on Vacation. I've heard about that. That was I watched that one night, it was a really good movie.
SPEAKER_04And I wrote that.
SPEAKER_03Thank you with that.
SPEAKER_04Is that the Jimenez lady? I think she might be a POC. No, not her. Wait. I said a white lady. I don't know. Emily Henry, never mind, never mind. I was thinking it was the Jimenez. Oh, Abby Jimenez, yeah. I like her stuff.
SPEAKER_03Yes, but I think people I won't say all of it.
SPEAKER_04I read like two.
SPEAKER_03Oh. I think People You Made with Kissy would like, and I think, well, this is another movie. Um, You Me and Tuscany, that's coming out on like digital.
SPEAKER_05Oh, You and Me and Tuscany was so good. See, that's my type. That's my so rom-com. Have y'all seen it? I have to wait until it comes on digital.
SPEAKER_03Actually, I think I like I like enemy celebrators and I think instant attraction. Not friend celebrates, but like instant attraction. I like that's why I like Suchi and Kofi's dynamic so much and tell me I'm not dreaming because it's very much just like oh I see. I know we see each other. Yeah, yeah, like yes. Okay, so ooh, something I wrote earlier, but just like I don't know, maybe like themed episodes, which I don't know how that would like work, but I do think this year, because Rikia, we were supposed to do this last year, and we never did it.
SPEAKER_04Christmas, uh yeah, holiday episodes, yeah, but honestly, this holiday we prepped so much beforehand, so I feel like I'll be good when it's time for the holidays. I won't be as stressed, like we prepped.
SPEAKER_03Because we read the book, we read the book a year ago, so we can do it, it's already done so we got that, and then okay, so last bit. Oh my god, y'all, the black woman's book faces this week. It's in a couple days. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_05You have 30 minutes.
SPEAKER_03So excited. I was so I was getting what was I doing yesterday when you sent me that text message, you're like, oh my god, the black woman smoke faster than 30 minutes. I was like, what are you talking about? Did you mean the mean? What did the mean? Is that what you meant? Yes. At least it was like huh? Like, what are you talking about? No, because I'm just and then when Rikita said the meme was like, uh, okay, okay, I get it though. It takes me a second. It's like, no, yeah. Oh my god, what are you what are you most excited? I don't know. I think I'm just I don't know what I'm excited for. I'm excited for like every I never been to Atlanta, so I'm just excited for my gosh, we get to take you over.
SPEAKER_05Atlanta.
SPEAKER_03Because the only other black pack I've been to is DC. That's a good one. Jee!
unknownDC.
SPEAKER_03I love DC, so I cannot wait. I cannot wait for Atlanta. I'm excited about the heat. No. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05It's not gonna be hard. It's probably like rainy a little bit. As a matter of fact, I was a little scared. It's gonna rain. It's gonna rain. Yeah, because I'm not gonna be.
SPEAKER_03Listen, Ricky, let me tell you. I know you said you want to be outside the sever, but let me tell you something, Ricky. I am that friend where it's like the minute that shit hits 80 degrees, I turn into a demon when it's hot outside. I I mean, I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_05Which means inside events have some holy water on the side. Yeah, inside events for the air. That's all.
SPEAKER_03I got a fan. I already bought my fan. I have my fan with it. I made sure it clips onto my purse. So our hotel. I got one. I got a fan too.
SPEAKER_05I'll be on this side. We have one on the floor.
SPEAKER_03That's not your food. That's your sister's food. So why are you and now you're blocking her from getting her food? She's gonna scratch you, children. Anyway, we have a fan because we're gonna be walking. We've got in the umbrella and everything. But yeah, what are you guys supposed to? I don't know. I'm excited for everything for Lloyd. Who has a Lloyd Pleasure P and who else?
SPEAKER_05Uh who's the other person? Jay Holiday, Jay Holiday, Jay Holiday. Yeah. Jay Holiday, yes. I'm so excited. I'm so excited. I just I'm excited to just be in the atmosphere, you know. Like, you know, events like that, it's just gonna be full of energy and like people who love the same things all the time.
SPEAKER_04That's what I said. People like-minded people, like I'm so and I feel like my book, I need to make a note section for like book recs because I feel like I'm gonna be getting so many different like book recommendations from different different types of people. I'm ready for that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I'm bringing a notebook. I'm bringing a notebook with me for that.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I was gonna break some writing too, especially for the keynotes and stuff. Yeah, yeah, and the you know, activities. Um and like it's just it's gonna be so fun. I'm so excited. And if y'all, y'all probably already know if you follow us or listen to us regularly, but we are a swag bag, so we smelled on his book festival this year. Yes, so be on the lookout for a little gifty gift. Um, those swag bags are.
SPEAKER_03I know, I'm excited.
SPEAKER_05There are gonna be bugs. Like, when they when she showed books, I was like, oh yeah, this this was me on Instagram.
SPEAKER_04Literally. Zooming in trying to see a lesson.
SPEAKER_05Yes.
SPEAKER_03What y'all got? What are we um yes? I don't know all the authors. Who are you hoping to meet? I'd listen, I know, I know Kennedy. Well, this is no shade to you, Tia, in any way, shape before. Kennedy Ryan, she's she's my Nericia's friend. Okay, I'm excited for you to meet her the year first time seeing my good friend Kenny Ryan. We love you. We love you.
SPEAKER_05She's a friend of the past.
SPEAKER_03She's gonna get her straight in while we're going this way.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, no, we're we're kidding. We're kidding.
SPEAKER_05We we, you know, we're I'm I'm I'm excited to hear her. I'm excited to meet Lady Nisha and um Kay. Oh my gosh, why can't it think of our name right now?
SPEAKER_04K L It's not K L it's K K. Hold on. K L.
SPEAKER_03What is her name? See, we're all just we don't know nothing. This I'm annoyed with myself. No, I'm not gonna be.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, L Ken. L Kaisen and those are my two. I know for sure I'm about to be at this point.
SPEAKER_03Let me look up. Is Christina? You know, is Christina is Christina Forrest? Is that her name?
SPEAKER_04Yes, Christina Forrest, she's on my list.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I'm sorry to meet her. Who else? I'm looking through everybody, literally alphabetical order. Girl, I got a whole list.
SPEAKER_04Tia Williams. Oh, I forgot she's gonna be there. Yes, yes, Christina Forrest, A.E. Valdez. Like, I love her books down. Jaquel J. Because yeah.
SPEAKER_05Oh, I forgot she's gonna be she's on the list, she's on the list, and then Natasha Bishop.
SPEAKER_04Those are like, I'm excited to see everybody, but those are the ones I know for certain. Like, I want to be at their tables.
SPEAKER_03Is Daniel Allen gonna be there too? So many good.
SPEAKER_04I think she is, she is, and I think she has an alternative cover that she's supposed to be selling to for her books, and they're pretty. They're pretty.
SPEAKER_03I cannot wait.
SPEAKER_04Super excited. Wait, isn't Zane gonna be there too? He got a big table. Right?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I know some people dropped out because I know Granger dropped out. Um we're sorry about that. Yeah, but I think what is that? No, I think yeah, I think Zane's gonna be there.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I'm excited. Now I'm I'm gonna be at a table right now. I'll I have to get one autograph.
SPEAKER_04I guess I feel like I'm so happy, like she's in the fact that we're driving, so we can like get as much stuff as we want and bring it back. Yes, yes, so right. We don't see her. Oh okay, she's there, she's there, she's there.
SPEAKER_03Oh scared.
SPEAKER_04I'm about to say no, because I was looking at the little thing and she's like table number one.
SPEAKER_03Okay, she's going, she's going.
SPEAKER_05Okay, yeah, and then yeah, we're gonna be in some lines.
SPEAKER_03How how are we preparing? How what are you how are we preparing? What are we packing? I I'm gonna say I feel like I'm gonna free bowl it. Um I don't know. I have my clothes packed, yeah, not packed, but like I know what I'm gonna wear, but I don't know.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, because we have book cella. I got my little outfits the same for the night events, and I'm I'm gonna keep it casual during the walking and standing and whatever.
SPEAKER_03I was gonna bring leggings, I'm gonna bring some workout pants, get my steps in. Yeah, Apple Watch. No, literally, because at first I was gonna I was I was also gonna text y'all earlier today. I'm like, oh, do you guys want to go to the hotel gym with me Saturday morning? And I was like, no, I'm an idiot. Like I didn't know, but you bring your answer now.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it starts so early. I feel like we're gonna have to be up by like at least seven because everything starts at nine. So we have to get up.
SPEAKER_05The first um the first um keynote I want to go to Saturday morning starts.
SPEAKER_04Everything starts super early. They do. It has like a little breakfast bar. It's not like a sit down. I think it's like a hotel bar.
SPEAKER_03See my mom's I'm gonna I need I need food. Oh, we're gonna eat hot. I can't be hot. Well, we're gonna eat. We gotta eat. I know I gotta be one, I gotta be hot. I can't be hot and hungry.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, we're struggling. It's plenty of yeah, no, we gotta get some good while we're there. And there's a couple points during the day where there's a good three hours before we do anything. The night stuff starts, and that's true.
SPEAKER_04And I think it's like, I don't know if they did it on purpose, it's like a lunch break. Kind of, it's like an unspoken lunch break between like the keynotes and stuff, so we can go eat.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that's good. Yeah, and like I said, if we have that big break, I shouldn't say it on the podcast, but I want to get a piercing.
SPEAKER_04Look, may not be wrong. We didn't we love a good side quest because I already mapped out a vinyl store. It's a 10-minute walk from the hotel.
SPEAKER_03Oh, she's we're we're going places okay, yeah, a little side quest. I am scared because I don't know if you can see I put it a little a little fake one and a little fixed. Oh prep. Okay, okay, yeah, yeah. I wanted to wear it because I've been wearing it to get used to the idea of it, to like it. And then my head, I'm like, what if I I could just get fake piercings, but I don't want to be a faker. No, I'm gonna go. And then so I have I have my makeup, I have my makeup planned. Then I'm gonna bring so if you guys want some eyeshadow stuff, I got you with that. Tia, let me do your makeup. Oh my god, let me do your makeup. Oh my gosh. Do you have the foundation and stuff? Good, because I don't be knowing. Deal foundation and stuff. Yeah, okay, okay, okay, but your makeup.
SPEAKER_04This is good. This is y'all. We are going to have a time, and I have like multiple portable chargers because we all the content. We're getting all the content.
SPEAKER_05Yes, yes, yes, yes, and snacks.
SPEAKER_04Because they said them lines be long.
SPEAKER_05I'm gonna want a snack. I honestly we need to stop at Dollar Tree on the way out and just get a whole bunch of literally. No, seriously.
SPEAKER_03Honestly, yeah, shit. I got bags of chips in my pantry I'll bring with me. Because you know me with my dietary restrictions, I need certain stuff.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, must be but y'all let us know in the comments when you're excited.
SPEAKER_03Yes, oh my god. I just I honestly I can't wait. I really can't wait. As getting close, I'm like, oh my god, but we're getting close, and like we said earlier, we're doing a little summer break to recalibrate, to recharge. We got stuff we're doing. So before we head off, let's talk about some of your favorite parts of the season so far. For you guys.
SPEAKER_05My favorite book was definitely I don't likewise.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yes, by far.
SPEAKER_04I feel like that in our conversation around this gammer because I feel like we was into that, like we was watching the daggone documentary to go along with it, we was on it, that was good, yes.
SPEAKER_03And of course, uh, I just want to extend gratitude for our listeners for listening consistently. Thank you with this season. Like, thank you. We haven't been doing that much social media this season compared to last season, so it's always that nerve-wracking thing of like, oh my god, like are we still gonna get stuff? But I don't know. Whenever I get that email, that's like, oh, we have this many downloads, okay. Like it makes me feel like a little bit.
SPEAKER_05I appreciate you guys. Please continue listening and sharing with anyone who you think might like it. Um because of course this is not our full-time job yet. Maybe one day, you know, so yes. Thank you for that.
SPEAKER_03Yes, I greatly appreciate it. And then what can we what can you guys expect while we're on our break? I'm gonna try and and hold myself accountable, post some podcast clips from the past seasons, from the past episodes to keep content interesting. Um maybe posting some more content whenever we have time. Whenever we have time is the keywords, guys, so don't don't hold us accountable.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_04I feel like it's just a free-for-all. Like if we read a good book that we like, hop on and just kind of talk about it a little bit. Just very chill, very chill. Yes, definitely.
SPEAKER_03Catch up on the seasons. If you're new to this, if this is your first episode you're listening to, cat you have time, you have a whole month to catch up on two whole seasons. 16 episodes. We this is our 16th episode. That's oh my crazy speed.
SPEAKER_04Y'all know how I feel about numbers. Let me look up 16. Hold on.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god, yes, do it. Do it, and I feel like I feel like people who like listen, like, oh, 16 episodes, that's not a lot, but it's like I think like I think we talk about this a lot all the time. It's like when we started talking about doing the podcast, all we see from people who, as people listen to podcasts, is a recording at their hand recording, they post it. There's so much that goes on. So much. Uh-huh. And shout out to my husband.
SPEAKER_04Yes! Yes, editor, our editor. Okay, we appreciate you so so so so much.
SPEAKER_05Yes, yes, he does it for free. And we love him for that because he offered and he helped us, especially when we were first starting, and we had no idea what we were doing.
SPEAKER_03So and maybe maybe speaking this into existence next season we can start filming in person.
SPEAKER_05Yes, yes, yes. I I really want, I really want that to happen. Like that would be a good thing. Yeah, he already know. I was telling him the other day. I was like, babe, you remember you said you had said, Yeah, I remember that time.
SPEAKER_03Yes, because that is uh that is so exciting. And then honestly, we can leave all of our equipment at your house.
SPEAKER_04Just show up.
SPEAKER_03No, literally, yep. Oh my god. What does number 16 mean, Ricky, before we head out?
SPEAKER_04Y'all, it says encouraging you to maintain positive thoughts and trust your intuition. It says the breaking of old habits in the pursuit of inner wisdom.
